August 19, 2025 — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), in coordination with multiple cheese producers and retailers, has launched a series of recalls involving various cheese products following concerns of possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. The preventive measures, though precautionary, reflect serious attention to food safety.
Wegmans Food Markets: Multi-State Recall of Camembert, Brie, and Cheese Flights
On August 12, 2025, Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. issued a recall for several cheese products after Estancia Holdings—its supplier in Georgia—was notified by its French source of potential contamination. The affected items include:
– Wegmans Medium Camembert Soft Ripened Cheese (8.8 oz; UPC 77890‑53515)
– Assorted Cheese Flight (1 lb; UPC 2‑77100‑00000‑0)
– Grilling Camembert with Tapenade & Roasted Tomatoes (10 oz; UPC 2‑77297‑00000‑0)
– Caramel Apple Pecan Topped Brie Cheese (13 oz; UPC 2‑77645‑00000‑3)
These products were sold across Wegmans stores in Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington, D.C., during the period July 1 to August 12, 2025. No illnesses have been reported to date. Affected customers—particularly Shoppers Club members—were notified via automated messages. Wegmans recommends discarding the products or returning them to any store for a full refund. The company also advises customers to sanitize surfaces that may have come into contact with the cheese, as Listeria can persist in cold environments.
Middlefield Original Cheese Co‑Op (Ohio): Large-Scale Recall
The Middlefield Original Cheese Co‑Op, based in Ohio, voluntarily recalled approximately 246.5 pounds of 100% Grass-Fed Pepper Jack, 2.5 pounds of Horseradish Flavored Cheese, 640 pounds of Monterey Jack, and 4,544.5 pounds of White Cheddar due to environmental contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.
These products, bearing various lot codes (e.g., 251661, 2524061, 251672, and codes like 7‑16‑25B), were produced on June 16, June 24, and July 16, 2025, and distributed throughout Ohio between July 14 and August 7, 2025. Although there are currently no reported illnesses, the FDA urges affected consumers to dispose of or return the products immediately. For inquiries, contact General Manager Nevin Byler at 440‑632‑5567 (weekdays, 8 a.m.–4 p.m. EST).
Fromi USA (New York): Recall of Brie Royal Faucon
Fromi USA announced a recall of 12 cases of its Brie Royal Faucon, distributed between July 24 and August 13, 2025, to Cheese Plate locations in Brooklyn’s Park Slope and Carroll Gardens neighborhoods. The recall cites potential Listeria contamination. These cases are identified by lot number 615, though cheese sold cut and individually wrapped may lack this identifier. Customers are advised to avoid consumption and return any affected cheese.
Listeria: Public Health Implications
Listeria monocytogenes poses significant health risks, particularly to pregnant individuals, elderly persons, young children, and those with compromised immune systems. While healthy individuals may experience fever, headache, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, Listeria infection (listeriosis) can result in miscarriage, stillbirth, severe illness, or death in vulnerable groups.
Consumer Guidance
If you have purchased any of the affected cheese products:
- Do not consume them under any circumstances.
2. Discard or return the products for a full refund.
3. Disinfect any surfaces in contact with the cheese to mitigate contamination risk.
4. Monitor your health—if symptoms arise, especially if you belong to a high-risk group, seek medical advice immediately.
