Celebrating and Supporting Our Seniors: Senator Roxanne J. Persaud’s Senior Resource Day

In today’s fast-paced world, it is all too easy to overlook the wisdom and contributions of our senior citizens. Yet, for New York State Senator Roxanne J. Persaud, honoring and empowering seniors has long been a priority. Her annual Senior Resource Day, now celebrating its 10th year, stands as a vibrant reminder that older adults deserve more than recognition—they deserve resources, protection, and opportunities to thrive.

Held on Tuesday, September 9th, from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM at Senator Persaud’s district office at 1222 East 96th Street in Brooklyn, Senior Resource Day is much more than a community gathering. It is a one-stop event that combines healthcare, safety, social services, and community connection, all designed with seniors in mind.

More Than Grandparents Day

What began as a recognition of Grandparents Day has evolved into something far more impactful. “Instead of saying Grandparents Day, we call it Senior Resource Day, because we’re adding more than just celebration—we’re providing vital resources,” Senator Persaud explained.

Health, Safety, and Financial Guidance

Healthcare providers and hospitals will be on-site to offer information on critical issues such as cancer screenings, prostate health, vision, and hearing. While no diagnoses will be made at the event, participants will leave with referrals and contacts to follow up with professionals.

The event also addresses rising threats like deed theft and financial scams, with representatives from the District Attorney’s Office, NYPD, and local banks offering practical advice and resources to protect seniors. “We know scammers are often going after seniors because they see them as easy targets,” Persaud cautioned. “We want them to understand that not everyone calling is genuine. Call your local bank, the police, or even my office before handing over money.”

Mobility and Independence

Recognizing that independence means mobility, the event includes information on transit options such as Access-A-Ride, half-fare MetroCards, and guidance on transitioning to the new OMNY system. “Seniors want to get around. They don’t want to be homebound, and we want them to remain active adults,” Persaud emphasized.

A Celebration of Community

Senior Resource Day isn’t just about handing out brochures—it’s a celebration. With music, dancing, food, and goody bags, the event fosters joy and connection. “Seniors love to come out. They network, they laugh, they dance. They leave uplifted,” Persaud said warmly.

Open to All

Although it is officially the Senate District 19 Senior Resource Day, seniors from across Brooklyn are welcome. “We don’t turn anyone away. It’s about making sure our seniors have the information, the fun, and the support they deserve,” Persaud noted.
