Members of the Daily News Union and The NewsGuild of New York on Monday hosted a “Defend the Daily News” rally outside City Hall alongside elected officials and other supporters including the CLC. The rally took place just before a City Council meeting at which Councilwoman Carmen De La Rosa introduced a resolution calling out the destructive practices of Daily News owner Alden Global Capital and strongly urging the predatory hedge fund to reach a contract deal with the newspaper’s union. The resolution, which is expected to be on the agenda for the August stated meeting, will be the strongest rebuke by elected officials of the hedge fund since Alden Global Capital began to take over newspapers across the country.
For three years, the Daily News Union has been fighting for a first contract that would ensure fair wage floors and guaranteed annual cost-of-living raises, job protections and fair benefits for part-time workers, job-security provisions that protect their work from being subcontracted permanently, and maintaining standard benefits like time off, sick time, parental leave and 401(k) match.
The rally clearly had an effect on Daily News management, who felt compelled to respond with an op-ed full of mischaracterizations and missing key facts. As journalists, these union members couldn’t let that slide, so they got out their red pens… check out their fixed copy!
