It’s been over eight months since BuzzFeed News Union brought a just cause proposal to the bargaining table — the cornerstone of nearly every strong union contract, which has been accepted as a news media industry standard for decades. We were thrilled to see the New Yorker Union reach a tentative agreement on just cause last week, making history in ending nearly a century of precarious, at-will employment at the magazine. But they should never have had to fight so hard; most unions don’t have to fight at all.
BFN Union’s colleagues in the BuzzFeed Canada Union saw the company agree to just cause with no editorial carve-outs almost immediately. Employees in the BuzzFeed News US union should have the same rights as their colleagues in other countries — not to mention journalists in other newsrooms. You can read and sign the Union’s letter to management about the importance of Just Cause without exceptions here. Please add your name as a supporter!
