WASHINGTON – On the same day Donald Trump announced an expansion of his Muslim Ban, the National Board of the Muslim Caucus of America, founded in 2017 to develop a national infrastructure for American Muslim political organizing, endorsed Sen. Bernie Sanders for president.
The MCOA emphasized Sen. Sanders’s longtime fight for the oppressed throughout his career, from his days as a civil rights activist to his participation in countless picket lines and strikes. The Muslim Caucus of America also expressed deep support for Sen. Sanders’ foreign policy focus on ending endless wars around the world.
“I am honored to receive the Muslim Caucus of America’s endorsement,” said Sen. Bernie Sanders. “Muslim Americans for generations have been part of the fabric of our American family. While Donald Trump has attempted to demonize the Muslim community, our movement is working to bring Muslims and people of all backgrounds together to create an economy, justice system and political system that are rooted in human rights for all.”
Receiving the support of the Muslim Caucus of America is a culmination of months of grassroots organizing in Muslim communities across the country by Bernie 2020 Muslim organizers and years of Sen. Sanders consistently showing up in support for the Muslim community.
Through the efforts of Muslims for Bernie, organizing calls are held every two weeks as well as organizing parties across the U.S. resulting in recruiting over 1000 active Muslim volunteers who are organizing their networks to support Sen. Sanders.
Last year, Sen. Sanders was the only candidate for president still in the race to attend the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) convention. He also joined imams, rabbis and pastors at the Islamic Center of Southern California in support of Muslims following the horrific white supremacist attack on a New Zealand Mosque. As part of his day one executive orders, Sen. Sanders has said he will overturn all of Donald Trump’s xenophobic and racist immigration policies, including the Muslim Ban. Prominent Bernie 2020 Muslim endorsers include, U.S. Rep. Rashida Tlaib, U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, Dr. Abdul El-Sayed from Michigan and comedian and professor Amer Zahr.
